Since
its establishment in 1949, the Perlite Institute has coordinated
innumerable research projects designed to develop new
products, applications, marketing advantages and to generate
information to ensure the continued growth of the industry.
In addition to the development of specifications through
organizations such as International Congress of Building
Officials (ICBO), American Society of Testing Materials
(ASTM), and International Standards Organization
(ISO), the Institute has sponsored projects through
such organizations as Underwriters'
Laboratories, Dynatech Laboratories, Portland
Cement Association, The West of Scotland Agricultural
College, The University of Georgia, The University of
Texas, as well as a host of private laboratories. Major
work is being conducted on behalf of CEN European Standards
in the development of perlite and perlite related standards
for use by the majority of the countries in Europe. The
results of this great body of information are available
to the members of the Institute. In addition, the Institute
provides legal counsel when needed at key regulatory meetings.
The research and technical investigations of the Institute
are formulated and directed by the various committees
and are overseen by the Board of Directors. The administrative
details of the work are directed by Institute staff personnel
and by consultants engaged by the Institute.
Possibly no single company has the resources to develop
the bank of data that has been developed and is being
developed by the Institute. Through the coordinated resources
of the membership, tremendous accomplishments have been
achieved for the benefit of the members.
